But what is rigging you may ask? Well! It is the process of adding a skeleton to the model and adding controllers to it. A model of itself is nice but if I want to be able to manipulate its limbs it needs a skeleton like a real living being.
Something I have been pondering from the start is the concept of a game controller. As these tools are the medium that translates the players thoughts and instincts into action on a screen. These devices are essensial to understand the concept of Game Feel.
As I have experimented with many different controllers and input during this project I feel this topic is worth discussing.
This weekend I went and joined Ludum Dare a big Game Jam in 48 hours. It’s always an experience to see a game getting created in a short time span. A lot of people that played my game mentioned that it’s very fun and addictive and I think that is due to me applying my Game Feel knowledge from this project. I’m gonna talk about how I applied what I learned in this project on this small game.
Today me and Johan finally got the chance of riding horses as we took a private lesson from the local riding club. As we have barely been on a horse in our entire life it was quite a learning experience.
In the last couple of weeks alot of things have happened.
Ive had a myriad of problems with the model which I never anticipated which slowed down the modelling progression. This is all linked to me not being that used to modelling in the first place since I havent really been doing it that much before this project. I did not consider that the workflow in how I proceed while modelling could do such a big impact. For example I did have a concept on how the character would look like, but it was not a final one. I found that if I actually had a more final concept on her looks helped alot in the process.
While looking up concepts that could relate to Game Feel I found i found the concept Game Usability. Katherine Isbister and Noah Shaffer say that usability is about how intuitive and effective the thing is to accomplish tasks. Game Usability is that applied to a game medium but that term is also applied to the broader idea of the game experience. Today I took and looked into Game Usability: Advancing the Player Experienceby Katherine Isbister and Noah Schaffer. (2008)
So in the latest days we have been thinking of scrapping the Vojlock. However we still have a project to do and it’s quite a waste to let all the things we done so far go to waste. That’s why I tried to use the concept with being a centaur but with different contexts and gameplay.
